Childcare quality standards: what they mean for a centre
Quality standards help people discuss childcare using shared expectations. They are useful when they connect the environment, relationships, staff practice and management. They are less useful when a badge or a broad claim replaces a clear explanation.

Separate regulation from quality frameworks
Applicable legal requirements establish obligations for an organization in its location. A quality framework can inform practice and improvement, but does not replace those obligations. Ask which requirements apply and which additional standards the provider chooses to use.
Understand what is being claimed
Standards-informed practice, a training certificate, a provider’s quality recognition and independent accreditation are different claims. A centre should explain the issuing organization, the scope and the status of any recognition it presents. Do not assume an organization-wide claim establishes the status of every centre.
How NAEYC informs the discussion
The National Association for the Education of Young Children publishes early childhood standards and operates its own quality assessment and accreditation system. Its public resources offer an international reference point for discussion of programme quality. Consult NAEYC’s current materials rather than relying on an undated summary.
Catco Kids and CKQA
Catco Kids brings standards-development experience and internationally informed quality systems, including reference to NAEYC standards. CKQA is Catco Kids’ own assessment, improvement and recognition framework. This is distinct from NAEYC accreditation and government licensing. Catco Kids does not claim NAEYC accreditation or affiliation on this basis.
Quality is maintained through practice
The meaningful question is how expectations affect children’s daily experience and how improvement is sustained. Discuss staff capability, leadership, parent communication and ongoing review. Public resources explain the purpose; internal assessment criteria and scoring methods remain confidential.
Choosing your next step
Employers reviewing an existing service can begin with the HR question list. Centre operators can ask about CKQA. Teams seeking to strengthen practice can discuss training. A discussion of your needs should establish the scope before any assessment or certification commitment.
Frequently asked questions
Does following NAEYC standards mean a centre is accredited by NAEYC?
No. Accreditation is a separate status awarded through NAEYC’s own process. Standards alignment alone does not establish accreditation.
Does CKQA replace government licensing?
No. Catco Kids quality recognition and applicable regulatory requirements are separate responsibilities.
