Workplace childcare safety: the decisions employers need to own
A workplace daycare brings young children into an environment designed primarily for adults. Safety therefore needs a deliberate relationship between childcare leadership and the host organization. Attractive premises alone cannot demonstrate that relationship.

Safety begins with accountability
Before appointing or reviewing a provider, establish who owns childcare delivery and who represents the employer. Ask how concerns reach decision-makers, how improvements are followed through and how responsibility continues during staffing changes. A contract should make the boundaries understandable to both sides.
Safeguarding is a leadership issue
Employers should ask how the provider addresses concerns about children’s wellbeing and how families and staff can raise concerns safely. Handling allegations requires appropriate expertise, confidentiality and applicable reporting obligations. A public marketing page cannot replace site-specific safeguarding arrangements.
Emergency readiness must account for children
A general office emergency plan may not reflect the needs of babies and young children. Ask how the daycare connects with the host site’s arrangements and how readiness is demonstrated. The right questions concern practical capability and coordination, not simply whether a document exists.
Health risks and workplace change need ongoing attention
Illness, air quality, building works and changes to access can affect children and families. Employers should ask who identifies changing conditions and who can make timely decisions. Review responsibilities when the premises, workforce or service changes; opening-day review is not sufficient.
Look for sustained capability
Training attendance and the ability to act are different questions. Ask about practical staff skills assessment, supervision and continuity. Discuss findings privately with the provider and the appropriate employer representatives. Avoid circulating children’s records, staff details or confidential incident information.
Use questions to begin a site-specific review
Our HR question list covers provider experience, emergencies, safeguarding, people and value. It is a starting point for discussion, not a safety certification or a substitute for qualified review. Catco Kids can discuss corporate management and CKQA support without publishing internal SOPs, scoring systems or response playbooks.
